Today I want to chat with you about something I’m very passionate about…
A lot of business owners show up to the first design meeting holding a list of websites they like, or a thumb drive full of “cool images” they found online.
They’ll tell me colors they like and colors they hate. Their favorite font.. and sometimes they’ve even mapped out exactly how the homepage should look.
It’s natural when you’re investing in a website to feel like you need to be highly involved in the design. But the thing most businesses misunderstand is also the #1 rule in design.
“It’s not about you!”
You see, most trades make their website all about themselves.
They’ll see a flashy design, or something on another website that looks cool and think “that guy looks busy, I probably need that on my site too”.
They’ll search for a web company with an affordable price and go about making changes all the while neglecting the one reason their website exists in the first place.
To get new customers.
If your target audience is customers between 50 & 65 looking to finally have that renovation they’ve been dreaming about, will flashy graphics, neon colors or lots of moving, shaking text on your website entice them to read on?
Before jumping into a redesign, put yourself in the shoes of your dream customer. What information and design will appeal to THEM.
After you’ve done that, make sure to chat with your web person about the goals of your site. They should be as invested in your growth as you are. If they just want to slap a new design on your current site without giving you a plan.. Keep searching, they’re not the right company for you.
Thinking about a redesign and not sure where to start? Give us a call, we’d be happy to chat.
